The Woman’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) SIGNED INTO LAW in 1998 mandates insurance coverage for surgery and reconstruction following a mastectomy. Health insurance companies and HMOs are generally required to provide WHCRA benefits to individual and employer policies. They should cover the expense of repigmentation as part of your post surgical reconstruction process. This required coverage includes all stages of reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed, surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance, prosthesis and treatment of physical complications from the mastectomy, including lymphedema.
Contact your insurance provider for more information or visit WHCRA at the United States Department of Labor or download the WHCRA Brochure. We can bill insurance providers.
Sometimes it’s cancer that leads us to reconstruction. Sometimes it’s the desire to be all we can be. Maybe a little better. We don’t always have control over the way things turn out. If you didn’t get the results you hoped for there is a way to improve your final outcome with camouflage, or a tattooed areola that mimics nature. This can give you the confidence and balance that surgeries sometimes can’t replace.
The following picture shows scarring and discoloration of the areola and surrounding skin due to Kenalog injection following breast augmentation surgery. Accent Permanent Makeup used multi-trepanic collagen actuation (MCA) scar treatment for the breast area and permanent makeup to improve the appearance of the areola.

Areolas are the circular, darker colored areas of skin that surround the nipples on human breasts.
Client below had a mastectomy on her right breast and then reconstructive surgery. Micropigmentation (permanent makeup) and dry needling scar reduction treatment was performed to create a matching areola.

The picture below shows a client who had breast reduction and lift resulting in an annular scar around the areola. Permanent makeup was tattooed over the scar, which softened it and immitated natural areola pigmentation.
